Summer Reading Programs

Alameda County Library

The summer reading game starts 6/15/20 and ends 8/15/20. The theme is a Kind, Connected Summer. One game board for all ages. They are available at pick up locations, and may be distributed at community locations. Activities to win game points include reading or listening to books, performing certain activities, or filling out a reading journal.

Barnes & Noble

Summer Reading Giveaway Grades 1-6. June 1st-August 31st. Print the reading journal (available in English and Spanish). Read any 8 books and have your parent sign the journal. Return the reading journal between 7/1-8/31 to any store and choose a free book from specific titles. May only be done once per child.

Chuck E. Cheese

Age: Under 10. Read daily for two weeks and fill out the reading reward calendar. Return calendar to Chuck E. Cheese and receive 10 free tokens. May be done multiple times. Can only redeem one calendar per day. (FOOD PURCHASE MAY BE REQUIRED).

Half Price Books

Age: Under 14. June 1st- July 31st. "Feed Your Brain" Summer Reading Program has gone viral! Print the Weekly Reading Log. Read and record minutes read and title of book and have your parent initial. Share your reading log online for a chance to win prizes!

Cal Bears Read Patrick Laird Summer Reading Challenge

Age: Students entering 1st-6th. Summer 2020. Parents Sign up child online and receive a reading log via email. (The log will serve as an official voucher for the tickets). The challenge: 1st and 2nd grade: read at least 4 books this summer; 3rd - 6th grade: read at least 6 books this summer. After completing the challenge and filling out the log, turn it into the Cal Ticket Office at California Memorial Stadium to receive 2 FREE tickets to the Cal football game against Cal Poly on September 12th (Subject to change due t ongoing public safety measures) Additional tickets may be purchased alongside the free tickets received for completing the challenge.

Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge

Age: K-6th. May 4th-Sept. 4th. A nationwide campaign that celebrates reading for fun while improving access to books during the summer. For 2020, Scholastic is excited to share a brand new kids experience in Scholastic Home Base, a free digital destination  which offers full books, live events, and games in a safe community for readers! Kids will be encouraged to track their "reading streaks" (the option of logging minutes still exists). Also, kids can now enter the titles of the books they are reading. Reading Streaks helps unlock a donation of 100,000 print books from Scholastic, distributed by United Way, to kids in areas with limited or no access to books.
